Cowells’ Battery & Signal Station

Visit: Cowells’ Battery & Signal Station. Hassel Island. USVI

I left you on Hassel Island where we had gone to the South East Corner to See Frederiks’ Battery.

Today lets go to Cowell’s Battery and Signal Station on the south east peak of the island. I think about 267 feet high. I was not sure I was going to make this climb as I am not the person or size to be climbing inclines, but I wanted to prove that I could do it I guess, so off we went.

The cat actually complained before me and wanted gramps to pick her up just before we got up there. She was tired girl!

This was originally built with 2 x 24 lb cannons back in 1801 for protection, later on in the 1800′s it was converted to a signal station as there was a lot of ship traffic going in and out of the harbor. It operated as a signal station until the 1980.s..

Here are a few pictures of our trip up there in September 2013.

I have spent many an hour wandering this island, imagining the days of old, ask your charter yacht to spend some time there if you are in St Thomas, it will transport you back in time.
